


Nancy is indebted especially to Jean Anderson who, as a volunteer with Fireweed Press, coordinated the entire project. In addition to the book’s publication, part of the prize for winning the contest was a reading and publicity tour of Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Homer, Alaska with Stanley Elkin. The book title comes from an essay by Eudora Welty, one of Nancy’s favorite writers at the time (and always!), who, in writing about the sense of place, encouraged Nancy to think about her own “compass,” which she found aimed at her adopted Alaska home, and the opportunities for creating a literature that might someday speak to place as powerfully as Welty and others have spoken to and of the South. The seven stories are all set in Alaska and mostly involve young women coming to terms with life in a place that both inspires and challenges them, often in remote or socially isolating circumstances. (Nancy, who had not at the time heard of Elkin, borrowed one of his books from the library and, stunned by his stylistic fireworks, thought, “this guy would never find anything to like in my writing.” She entered the contest only because it seemed like a good incentive to organize the stories she’d been writing and revising as a member of a small, informal writing group.) The competition was judged by Stanley Elkin, the highly acclaimed author of such imaginative novels as Searches and Seizures, The Dick Gibson Show, and The Magic Kingdom.

This small book of Nancy’s first stories was published in 1984 by the non-profit Fireweed Press as the result of a statewide short fiction contest sponsored by Fireweed and the Alaska State Council on the Arts.
